A quick look at our staff orders shows what’s popular amongst our talented team! Top names like Lake Breeze, Richard Hamilton and Angove are impressing, of course, but the Strout Road Vintners Cabernet Malbec is super popular, and Sam Trimboli’s Salvatore Malbec Shiraz Durif simply walks out the door. The new Russell & Suitor Alejandro Saperavi (a Georgian grape, now grown in Australia) is a must-try too. Enjoy them all for an exceptional $14.99 a bottle. Bargain!
From Lake Breeze, Halliday Wine Companion's 'Best Value Winery of the Year 2022', the Bullant Shiraz is their entry-level offering but it delivers "extraordinary value" (Tony Love, Halliday Wine Companion). You have to feel for the vineyard workers who danced amongst the vines avoiding the menacing bull ants who resided there. And this Shiraz has just as much bite. It can partner a cheese plate equally as well as a rare fillet steak. "Deep ruby core, some purpling tints at the rim. Blackberries and bresaola on the nose. Dark fruits open the palate but morphs quickly into an earth and meat savoury tone. Good flow with supple tannins carrying it quite long into a slightly saline finish. Great value here... 90pts" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review). Drinking well now but will age gracefully for the remainder of the decade.
The name of this exciting new Shiraz gives a nod to a colourful footnote in the rich history of the Hamilton winemaking clan. Before Richard Hamilton emigrated to Australia in 1837 to establish South Australia’s first commercial vineyard, he had run a well-known tailoring business in the UK Port of Dover. His interest in wine had also led to a sideline business of ‘importing’ French wine from over the English Channel – under the cover of darkness! Five generations on, Dr. Richard Hamilton owns the estate and he and chief winemaker Paul Gordon maintain the family tradition of excellence. Shiraz vines for The Smuggler grow just 10km from the sea – so as well as intensely flavoured dark and spicy fruit, the wine displays wonderful freshness too. It has gone down a storm with wine writers – and customers who have tasted it.
Saperavi is the hero grape of Georgia in Europe (the oldest wine producing region in the world). You don't often find it in Australia, but the warm, dry conditions of the Murray Darling allow this deeply coloured, tannin-rich grape to thrive. If you love big, in-yer-face styles of red, then you must try this. Mulberry, dark fruits, fennel and spice combined to produce a complex aromatic wine that resembles a rich, dark fruit cake. Rich, tannic, full-bodied palate with lots of French and American oak to complement the fruit and spice.
Malbec is a grape close to Sam's heart. His wife Maria, who works with him, is from Argentina, so perhaps that's not surprising. He also has a passion for the Durif grape and has done for decades. His car licence plate even reads 'DURIF'. What he loves most though is making wines that wine lovers adore. And he has been doing that for years very well indeed. We've worked with him for decades, and this shy, modest man is simply brilliant at creating wines that show judges – and our customers – love! His grandfathers back in Italy began the winemaking tradition of the Trimboli family, they would be very proud of Sam.
As you can imagine, the folk who live on Strout Road in McLaren Vale have heard a lot of trout jokes. If you can’t beat them, join them, say the Strout Road Vintners. The Strout Road Vintners LOVE their Cabernet Malbec and Malbec Cabernet blends, and it’s a style that’s really taking off. This is a beautifully plush red where juicy blueberry-rich Malbec is surrounded by dark, cassis-laden Cabernet. The result coats the mouth and finishes long. A must-bring for your next barbecue.
5 Red Star Angove is one of Australia's oldest family owned wineries, founded in 1886. They have access to some of the finest fruit in the best reds regions of South Australia. The Angove Bin 4288 Cabernet Sauvignon is exclusively and carefully crafted from grapes grown in the Coonawarra for our customers. The fruit from the 2020 vintage was fantastic – small berries, great fruit concentration and lovely tannins. Warm days and cool nights provided the perfect ripening conditions for Coonawarra’s signature variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. Upon arriving at Angove's 110-year-old winery, the Cabernet grapes were gently destemmed and placed in small open fermenters. Regionally distinctive blackcurrant, spearmint and eucalypt aromas are followed by a full palate with brooding blackberry fruit and supple, mouth-filling structure. For an added layer of fruit complexity, mocha richness and overall elegance, the winemakers blended in a tiny portion (7%) of McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon.
