Originating in the Loire Valley of France, Chenin Blanc is a chameleon of grapes. It can make everything from sparkling right through to very sweet ‘moelleux’ wines. It classically has floral, apple, quince and pear aromas. It makes some of the most extraordinarily long-lived, uniquely flavoured sweet wines in the world with an underlying acidity. In South Africa it is known as ‘Steen’ and made in a very dry, steely style. There are pockets of it grown around New Zealand and Australia, like McLaren Vale – try Dowie Doole, Bees Knees or Coriole out for size.
