From Kilikanoon’s Clare Valley heartland – this cuvée makes use of fruit from several ‘Settlement’ blocks in Leasingham originally given to soldiers returning from the World Wars. Warm days and cool nights yield Shiraz of terrific power, elegance and length. The use of multiple blocks and careful oak ageing, adds complexity for a rich, satisfying premium Kilikanoon Shiraz full of black fruit and peppery notes.
They’ve done it again! Kilikanoon have just taken home the award for ‘Best Producer Australia’ at the Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Awards. This is the 6th year in a row, bringing them to an incredible 8 wins of this coveted international award. The inaugural vintage of a classic Australian composition, the Morrison Shiraz Cabernet is delightful in its youth, while being built for longevity. Shiraz sourced from the Morrison vineyard and Cabernet grown on the opposite ridge. It shows the Clare’s blue and black fruit-spectrum against savoury tones of cedar and spice. 96pts and multiple Golds and this is only the beginning!
James Halliday calls Kilikanoon “truly the best of the best” and named Kilikanoon his 2013 Winery of the Year. Robert Parker calls it “one of the most brilliantly run wineries in Australia ... the speciality is Shiraz”. For this masterful red, low yielding parcels of Shiraz were selected from vineyards based on concentration of flavours. Each parcel was subsequently vinified seperately using traditional winemaking techniques and aged for eighteen months in seasoned French oak casks. The result is a lush dark red colour with black tapenade, liquorice, forest berries, cinnamon and clove on the nose. Powerful red fruits give way to savoury charcuterie with hints of dark chocolate and a fine, velvety finish. It's "Dense and impressive. 95pts” as Ned Goodwin MW notes in the Halliday Wine Companion but there are lighter, brighter and more fragrant notes here too.
Planted in 1946, the old Walton Grenache block is a monument to the history of the Clare Valley. Dry-grown bush vines were planted in terra rossa soils, allowing excellent drainage at elevation and with an aspect which captures the late summer sun. This wine is a pure expression of Clare Valley Grenache. Aromas of strawberry, dark cherries (almost Cherry Ripe), cedar-spice with hints of sandalwood. The palate is silky smooth and vibrant, redolent with red cherries, red plums, blood orange and chocolate. The finish is long, expressive and youthful. Plenty behind it to cellar into the medium term and possibly more. "Youthful, vibrant red in the glass. Exotic aromas of five spice, cola, blueberry, dried herbs and red cherry. Flavours are mid-weighted, rich and fleshy. There’s plenty of red and blue fruit drive, supple and caressing tannins and bouncy, zingy acidity keeping all in check. Lovely, expressive grenache here, layers of flavour and a decent whack of complexity... 95pts" (Aaron Brasher, The Real Review).
Crafted by the great Kevin Mitchell at Kilikanoon, who is famous for his outstanding Shiraz. His wines have regularly achieved a huge 98 points from Robert Parker and his top Shiraz sells for over $500 a bottle! Baroota is a 'special project' red, grapes selected from a number of top, early ripening vineyards between premium areas Spencer Gulf and the Flinders Ranges. Vinified in small batches. Enjoy aromas of blackberry with a sweet oak and vanilla lift, plus highlights of spice and eucalyptus. The intense, warming palate is loaded with dense black fruit, and smooth tannins carry the Shiraz to a delightfully long rich finish. It’s best decanted, then served with a rib eye steak or roasted eggplant.
First made back in 1997 and still definitely one of the sentimental favourites in the Kilikanoon portfolio, the Prodigal continues to set the standard for Clare Valley old-vine Grenache. Each fruit parcel was harvested and kept separate throughout the winemaking process until final assemblage. A fresh and lively palate, yet dark and brooding at the same time, the combination of ripe cherries, dark chocolate, kitchen spices and kirsch perfectly in sync with the fine chalky tannins and oak influences rounding out to a long flavoursome finish. The fruit is from the top-quality Watervale sub-region of the Clare, and this 2020 vintage delighted multiple show judges and garnered critical acclaim. It seems everyone agrees it is really a beautiful wine.
“The 2022 Mort's Reserve Riesling is an interesting wine! The acidity is green, with lime inflections, but it brings with it a succulence and intensity that spears through the very heart of the fruit. It has 11% alcohol, which addresses the acid query. When I am judging at shows, there is always one wine that gets a gold from me based on the level of uncomfortability of the acid—this would get that medal. I give these because they indicate the wine will age prodigiously, and while it may not be easy drinking in the short term, it suggests a longevity that will hold it in very good stead. Lean, austere, tight and focused, it's like a spear head in flight. It almost whistles with its pace. Don't drink it this year or next. Note the drinking window.” Erin Larkin The Wine Advocate
A regional soulmate to Kilikanoon's Clare Valley Covenant Shiraz and McLaren Vale Parable Shiraz, the Testament reflects the unique, terroir driven expression of the Barossa Valley, both its opulence and regional distinctiveness. Opulent and voluptuous, with waves of blackberry, cherry, vanilla and spice, balanced by hints of olive tapernade savouriness. Awarded Double Gold and 93pts at Gilbert & Gaillard, the judges recognising it as "A promising, age-worthy fine wine."
