Beyond the Labels
A terrific case of bestselling favourites. In whites, dive into the lovely 16 Little Black Pigs White Blend boasting a riot of tropical fruit flavour Sam Trimboli’s dazzling Trebbiano (the 2022 won Four Gold and two Trophies and we think this is just as good), Bill Calabria’s regal Long Live the King Pinot Grigio – and so much more. Reds include luscious Gold-medal winners from the great John Quarisa, the mighty Black Pig McLaren Vale Shiraz, a cracking Cabernet from the wild and windswept Limestone Coast, a luscious Durif that’s literally made for meat – and more.
The original black pig was named Tanuki. He was a cheeky little pork chop. So loved was he by his winemaking owner, it was only right we honoured this special pig with a wine of his own. Produced from hand-selected fruit from top McLaren Vale vineyards, The Black Pig Shiraz leaps from the glass with sumptuous, rich and ripe blackcurrant tones and vanilla snippets. Oozing lashings of cedar, ripe berries and hints of chocolate this stunning Gold-winning Shiraz is the kind of wine that can drink now with ease, or be laid down for another 8 or so years. Shiraz drinking perfection.
It’s wine like this, made using fruit from premium sites throughout the region, that makes South Australia a first choice destination for lovers of big, generous and velvety Aussie reds – consider it the state’s great gift to the wine world, not just at home but all over the globe. The Old Red River Gum Cabernet Shiraz flows with distinctive black fruit, eucalypt and spice, smoothed out by delicious dark chocolate and a touch of smoky oak. This vintage is a winner of a Double Gold medal, in fact four of the past five vintages have won Gold or Double Gold, and one of them scooped an International Trophy as well. Enjoy it with a rib eye or sip it solo with a beautiful vista.
The Tangled up in White label is reserved for funky blends that change with the vintage, depending on what’s best at the time. There are no rules … whatever the winemaker thinks is best gets to go into the bottle. Sometimes they’re complicated blends made up of a few varieties, but other times the winemaker likes just two pure varieties to shine – like this lovely Chardonnay Verdelho blend. It’s a cracker. The nose offers an abundance of lemony, leafy and herbal aromas with hints of blossom. The palate is dazzling and fresh, oozing an abundance of green apples, blossom and precise citrus fresh finish. This is something you definitely want to get tangled up in. Chill, sip, enjoy
You can’t be a winemaker until you get experience, but you can’t get experience until you make wine. Enter the Catch-22 Project! It’s run by an established and highly acclaimed winemaker who teaches fledgling young winemakers how to craft quality wines. He encourages innovation and experimentation and thrives on the new ideas that flow freely from these aspiring winemakers. This one combines lovely, lemony Semillon with minerally crisp Fiano (an Italian grape that has found a very happy home in the Barossa) to create a full-flavoured, versatile white that will match a delicious array of dishes, from fresh seafood to roast chicken, to spicy Thai or creamy Italian – and more!
A delicious Gold-winner from vineyards within earshot of the bells that call out from the 'City of Churches', Adelaide. You could almost say this is a real parish pleaser. This classy white is made for lazy warm weather drinking on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The International Challenge Gilbert & Gaillard judges loved its "Complex nose combining lime, white peach and jasmine. Well-defined, fleshy and rich in the mouth, driven by a lovely, invigorating freshness. The pure, crisp fruity aromas are a delight. Gold". The lovely grassy, citrussy Semillon characters bounce off the crisp, mouthwatering palate. The Steeple Block Semillon is simply sublime with fresh seafood. Try it for yourself and see.
This cracking drop is the second ever release of this brilliant white and blends together a delicious array of varieties… vibrant and toasty South Australian Chardonnay, aromatic Viognier, grassy Sauvignon, and a touch of tropical fruit-rich Verdelho… to make a truly lipsmacking delight. Last year's vintage won Gold at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, with the wine judges writing, "Light golden yellow colour. Pleasant nose combining white fruit, hints of apricot, toast and aromatic herbs. The palate is well-defined, fleshy, rich and invigorating, opening with lime and exuberant, persistent aromas. No shortage of character." This vintage it's won Gold again!More importantly, it's a winner with fish and chips.
The Italian families of the Riverina have been producing royally good wines for years and now the secret is out! In critic James Halliday’s words... Calabria Family Wines “consistently delivers exceptional value for money across the entire range”. Bill Calabria, the leading light behind the winery's success, received a Queen’s Birthday Honour for his services to charity and the wine industry as a whole. An his winery has won Trophies and Golds galore. Made in the light, crisp and zesty Italian style by Chief Winemaker Emma Norbiato, this dazzling Aussie Pinot Grigio makes a wonderful partner to Italian fare like pizza, pasta, grilled meats ... you get the picture!
Sam Trimboli's 2022 vintage Trebbiano has hit the heights again! This time winning a Gold, Top Gold and a Trophy at the Riverina Wine Show, plus another Trophy and Gold at the Australian Inland Wine Show. Thanks to New South Wales’ hot, dry growing season, the grapes achieved serious ripeness and flavour concentration. As a finishing touch, Sam treated the wine to four months in French oak barrels. You, too, will be impressed by the wine’s ripe citrus-fruit flavours, plus the creamy/nutty nuance imparted by the oak aging. Enjoy a refreshing glass on its own or serve with Italian-inspired cuisine (like white pizza or alfredo-sauced pastas) or fresh seafood dishes.
The Limestone Coast region encompasses some of Australia's most revered viticultural land and, without fail, produces reds with both voluptuous fruit and great structure. The 2022 harvest was characterised by its low cropping levels, which resulted in wines of immense power and concentration. The Ravensthorpe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon brings together flavours of cassis, blackberry and a hint of the region's eucalypts with well-integrated toasty oak characters. A great wine to share with a hearty meal, and with careful cellaring it will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years.
Get ready for full-bodied, rich fruit flavour with this highly awarded, three-time Gold-winning Caravan Petite Sirah (Durif). It's made by Australia’s hottest winemaker, John Quarisa (or Johnny Q as he’s known). For 20 years John worked long hours at some of Australia’s best wineries, including McWilliam’s, Casella and Nugan Estate. He always dreamed of setting up on his own but kept putting it off. That was until wife Josephine ‘spat the dummy’ (as they say in Oz) and told him to get a move on! Now he works even longer hours, but making his own wine, at his own winery. Taste fresh ripe blackberry and plum flavours, hints of pepper and well integrated toasty vanillin oak. Enjoy with a hearty casserole or steak.
John and Josephine Quarisa’s passion extends far beyond the boundaries of the wine industry, to their home, their family, their hobbies, heritage and through the simplest things associated with everyday life. This life long, energetic partnership started at school when John and Josephine became high-school sweethearts. Over the years they have grown and developed and are still laughing and loving every step of the way. As a winemaker for over 30 years, John’s winemaking has been awarded some of Australia’s greatest accolades including both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. John’s experience drove him to develop a range of wines that are down to earth, full of character and approachable. Also true of John himself! This Shiraz is intense cherry red with purple hues. Aromas fresh ripe berries are complemented by rose petal and orange blossom. The same ripe berry flavours are given added complexity on the palate thanks to well-integrated vanillin oak and spice notes. Long, smooth and irresistible.
The Adaptaur is a tropically-adapted Bos taurus beef cattle breed which was developed in Australia in the 1950s from crosses between Herefords and Shorthorns. Like the bull, the Adaptaur Reserve Durif is the perfect example of careful selection, hailing from selected vineyards in South Australia. The result is a wine that has intensity, decadent and dark with rich flavours of plum and spicy black fruit. Earthy tannins are well balance. An obvious food wine that would do well with the heartiest beef meals.
