Reds include award-winners from “magician” (Halliday) John Quarisa, Sam Trimboli’s super-popular Black Duck Durif (nothing little about this black duck!), the lavish Deep River McLaren Vale Shiraz and plenty more. In whites, you’ve the shimmering Dragonfly Sauvignon Semillon from WA’s 5 Red Star Willow Bridge, Andrew McPherson’s full-on Full Fifteen Chardonnay, the charming Miss Grigio Pinot Grigio and other top favourites. Winning!
If you love the big rich wines from bestselling The Black Pig label, then don't miss their latest 16 Little Black Pigs offering – a luscious South Australian Cabernet showing all the intensity that you know and love. Last year's vintage won Gold in France and we expect great things from the 2022. Get ready for billowing black fruit, cedary oak and grippy tannins on a long, intense finish. It's waiting for sizzling barbecue.
The judges at China's Wine & Spirits Awards were impressed by this rich, spicy Shiraz, unanimously awarding it a Gold. It’s from John Quarisa, who for many years made wine for the biggest names in Oz, winning both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. Today, with the help of his wife Josephine, he crafts winners like this. ‘Passion is Everything’ is their motto, and, after just over a decade in operation, their winery in New South Wales boasts four stars from Aussie wine guru James Halliday. He describes the “exceptional value for money provided by the wines” and is full of praise for this red. It’s deliciously easy going, but still packs a punch of luscious ripe fruit. A sure bet for a bbq, a roast or a hearty bake.
Matured in American oak, the Black Duck Durif is full bodied and smooth with layers of spicy fruit. It's made by Sam Trimboli, whom many customers will know from his days at Warburn Estate, where he collected hundreds of awards for his legendary skills. During that time he developed an obsession for the obscure Durif, a “stunning little powerhouse grape that develops astounding complexity”, as he describes it. The Durif grapes for this wine come from a small vineyard that Sam helped establish in the 1980s. It’s now at peak maturity. In the 2021, he decided to add a small portion of punchy spice Petit Verdot for extra complexity and dark berry intensity. Perfect with char-grilled steak or strong cheeses, or as a warming glass solo.
This limited release Patronus The Fawn Semillon was crafted from a select vineyard in the beautiful Barossa Valley. The wine is fresh, fruit forward and crisp with enticing aromas of fresh citrus, crisp apple and a hint of passionfruit. An enjoyable wine with balanced acidity and length. The perfect long lunch wine to crack open with friends.
The term ‘Wayfaring’ means ‘to travel’, while ‘Catador’ means ‘taster’ in Spanish. Bring these together and you get a rough definition of what our roving wine buyers do each vintage – discover the best wines from the best regions to bring you a stunning final product. And it's not just a pretty label... this beautiful white blend tastes as good on the inside as it looks on the outside! Lipsmackingly fresh and zesty, it boasts beautiful tropical fruit and citrus zing on a vibrantly crisp palate. One for a delicious chicken schnitzel.
The essence of summer: Take all the joy of a summer fruit salad, with the zip and zing of tropical fruit and a dash of sunshine, distil it into a wine and you will have the miracle that is Verdelho. A native of Portugal, this sumptuous grape has really made a home for itself here in Australia. It’s a wine you’ll be seeing a lot more of as it makes it way onto the wine lists of the country’s best restaurants. Love a fruit-forward Chardy without any of the oak? Partial to a tropical Sav Blanc that’s a little less grassy? This is your perfect middle-ground and will definitely hit the sweet spot.
This complex, deeply-flavoured red comes from McLaren Vale, the spiritual home of the small Australian winery and many of the country’s iconic reds. Big, rich and full-flavoured, it’s McLaren Vale to a T. Small parcels of top quality McLaren Vale Shiraz were selected from vineyards of McLaren Vale growers like Mike Rogers. Mike’s vines grow on iron-rich soils near the Onkaparinga River, which has carved out spectacular deep gorges through the foothills – and given the wine its name. The generously rich fruit enjoyed extra care and attention in the winery, which has added to the wine’s mouthcoating depth and complexity. It ripples with vibrant mulberry, plum and spice on a rich, smooth palate. Well-integrated oak makes for a profoundly satisfying, full-bodied Shiraz.
The thirst for the fruit filled wines of Australia doesn't stop. So getting our hands on good value, great tasting wines with class and character has its challenges. That’s where our well-travelled scout comes in – Michael, nicknamed Mr Anderson (a reference to the Matrix movies). And with outback wineries flung far and wide it’s ideal to have a Kombi to hole up in. Meet our wine Mr Anderson, which captures all that’s great about local Sauvignon. It leaps from the glass with tropical guava and a real zip of lime. In the words of Mr Anderson, “Hot diggity dog, it tastes good!” Great on its own, it's tasty with chicken kebabs or spicy eastern dishes.
A luscious Gold-medal Merlot from the great John Quarisa. It's smooth and complex, with velvety black forest fruits and a juicy plummy note. The palate is silky and lovely. It’s a brilliant partner to pan-fried lamb cutlets. John Quarisa’s lovely Caravan Petite Sirah has become a cult-classic with our customers. But will his velvety Merlot knock the Petite Sirah off its perch?
The mouthwateringly vibrant 30 Mile Riesling is crafted by the talented John Quarisa, who – aside from winning Australia's coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy – has enjoyed a “distinguished career as a winemaker spanning over 20 years” (Halliday). John likes his wines to express big personality, juicy fruit and value for money. They also have a magic knack of winning Gold – often several times over! His Riesling is fresh, aromatic and bursting with citrus. Lemon and lime liven up the palate, with subtle green apple hints. Racy acidity makes a fantastic pairing with a platter of fresh prawns.
Many of you will remember Sam Trimboli from his days at Warburn Estate where, every vintage, he’d pick up literally hundreds of awards. He’s still on a winning streak, but now he’s renting space all for himself at a winery in Riverina, New South Wales. Sam makes there the mighty Black Duck, and his white version – the equally fruity and irresistible White Duck. Sam has been in the region for many years, so knows exactly where the best grapes are growing. In 2023, he selected when he wanted them picked too, cool fermenting and adding a touch of citrusy Pinot Grigio to the blend. This is the sort of wine you should never be short of, ready chilled in the fridge. Exuberant with bright melon fruit – serve solo or with a spicy noodle dish.
One of our lovely team members, Sandra, came up with the concept for this label when we mentioned a classy new wine was on the way. The photograph was taken by her father of her stunningly beautiful mother Winsome, which they keep in an album referred to as The Notebook. This is the kind of wine you open on the verandah of a holiday house by the water somewhere with good food and great friends! Aromatic and approachable – everything you want in a tempting Tempranillo. Redcurrant and plum with a touch of savouriness, making it ideal with tapas.
