Beyond the Labels
If the rich McLaren Vale Shiraz, lush straight Cabernet from the fossil-rich soils of the Limestone Coast, Cabernet Malbec blend, vibrant Tempranillo and Gold-medal Bordeaux weren't luring you to add to cart – then perhaps the stylish set of stemless glasses from Dartington will be enough to tip the balance. You won't find these reds anywhere else in the country and you'll be very happy you did find them!

The name of this exciting new Shiraz gives a nod to a colourful footnote in the rich history of the Hamilton winemaking clan. Before Richard Hamilton emigrated to Australia in 1837 to establish South Australia’s first commercial vineyard, he had run a well-known tailoring business in the UK Port of Dover. His interest in wine had also led to a sideline business of ‘importing’ French wine from over the English Channel – under the cover of darkness! Five generations on, Dr. Richard Hamilton owns the estate and he and chief winemaker Paul Gordon maintain the family tradition of excellence. Shiraz vines for The Smuggler grow just 10km from the sea – so as well as intensely flavoured dark and spicy fruit, the wine displays wonderful freshness too. It has gone down a storm with wine writers – and customers who have tasted it.
This complex, deeply-flavoured red comes from McLaren Vale, the spiritual home of the small Australian winery and many of the country’s iconic reds. Big, rich and full-flavoured, it’s McLaren Vale to a T. Small parcels of top quality McLaren Vale Shiraz were selected from vineyards of McLaren Vale growers like Mike Rogers. Mike’s vines grow on iron-rich soils near the Onkaparinga River, which has carved out spectacular deep gorges through the foothills – and given the wine its name. The generously rich fruit enjoyed extra care and attention in the winery, which has added to the wine’s mouthcoating depth and complexity. It ripples with vibrant mulberry, plum and spice on a rich, smooth palate. Well-integrated oak makes for a profoundly satisfying, full-bodied Shiraz.
The premium grapes selected for the Fossilbed Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 were from vineyards planted in the ancient soils of the Limestone Coast. Stretching from the Victorian border to the Younghusband Peninsula in South Australia, the Limestone Coast is one of Australia's most versatile wine growing regions. Settled since the early 1840s, much of the region was submerged by sea as recently as 2 million years ago. The deep limestone deposits created by coral and ancient sealife are now home to Australia's most important source of fossils and are classified as a World Heritage site. This handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon balances rich and lush black fruit (cassis and plum) with vanillin baking spice oak. Ready to enjoy now, but has the hallmarks of a wine which can cellar for a few years.
As you can imagine, the folk who live on Strout Road in McLaren Vale have heard a lot of trout jokes. If you can’t beat them, join them, say the Strout Road Vintners. The Strout Road Vintners LOVE their Cabernet Malbec and Malbec Cabernet blends, and it’s a style that’s really taking off. This is a beautifully plush red where juicy blueberry-rich Malbec is surrounded by dark, cassis-laden Cabernet. The result coats the mouth and finishes long. A must-bring for your next barbecue.
Ludovic Roussillon is one of the top viticulteurs in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. He knows how to coax the very best out of his soils to get the most flavour in his grapes. Work hard in the vineyard and the wine almost makes itself, he says. We’ve worked with Ludovic for a number of years, enjoying both his red and his white from Château Le Coin. This is another wine from his vineyards – mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – all vinified to bring out the fruit richness, supported by sleek tannins. Rethink Bordeaux with this supple, generously fruity, rounded red. It’s already drinking really well, with or without food. Roast beef, full flavoured pasta dishes, charcuterie, cheese – this wine is very versatile.
For pure practicality, these stemless glasses are the way to go. They're elegant without being pompous, and enduringly practical for all your drinking needs. Take them on a picnic, to a BBQ or just enjoy at home without the fear of easily knocking one over. The Dartington story begins in 1920, when the Dartington Hall Trust was founded to help struggling rural communities. Today, it's an award-winning organisation and the leading UK glass manufacturer, with workers who've been in the business for 40 years. You can rest assured your wine is in good hands!
One of our lovely team members, Sandra, came up with the concept for this label when we mentioned a classy new wine was on the way. The photograph was taken by her father of her stunningly beautiful mother Winsome, which they keep in an album referred to as The Notebook. This is the kind of wine you open on the verandah of a holiday house by the water somewhere with good food and great friends! Aromatic and approachable – everything you want in a tempting Tempranillo. Redcurrant and plum with a touch of savouriness, making it ideal with tapas.
