Grenache is becoming more and more popular – and one taste of these vibrant, red-jewelled Grenache beauties shows why. They’re so lovely that some winemakers broadcast their deliciousness on the label. Thistledown calls theirs ‘Gorgeous’ and Tscharke ‘A Thing of Beauty’. They both come from McLaren Vale, and they really do live up to their names. More Grenache beauty can be found in the lovely Franca’s Vineyard Grenache, and the Sevenhills Cellars Estate Grown Inigo Grenache is positively spiritual! Allegiance Wines and Curtis take top fruit from across South Australia to make their power-packed, awarded drops that impress with their intensity. This is a wonderful dozen – enjoy.
Tscharke says he believes Grenache “actually looks better without the oak”. “There’s a freshness and delicacy and prettiness to these wines, which elevates the fruit,’’ he says. Tscharke’s aptly named Grenache uses fruit from the Marananga sub-region of Barossa, and could have been made by fairies: pretty aromas of rose petals, cherries and ripe strawberries lift from the glass, complemented by savoury hints. The palate surprises with its seriousness: concentrated strawberry flavours give way to spicy, savoury tones, with a touch of orange rind and aniseed. Complexity, finesse and power. This boasts three Golds and 95pts from Halliday's Greanche challenge putting Grenaches from all over the country head to head. Enjoy it slightly chilled.
The Curtis family have been growning grapes and making wine in McLaren Vale since 1973. Their family winery is just west of the township of McLaren Vale and is now run by Mark, Thomas and Jenna Curtis, with the occasional word of two of guidance from their father, Claudio Curtis. Their Heritage label may be a nod to the past, but stylistically, this Grenache is modern, fresh and highly enjoyable. Aromas of soft red fruits, strawberries and raspberries especially, with hints of spice and rose petal. Sam Kim, Wine Orbit is full of praise: "This is delightfully styled, showing sweet cherry, floral, olive and warm spice aromas, leading to a beautifully smooth palate that's rounded and flowing. A lovely expression of the variety with an immediate appeal".
New Goodwin MW in the Halliday Wine Companion recommends chilling it to enhance its moreish quality further.
From a new wave of excellent winemakers focused on elevating the virtues of this vastly under-rated variety. Sourced from a number of old vineyards in the Riverland and McLaren Vale, some of which are dry grown bush vines. Aromatic and lifted on the nose with a beautifully layered, textural palate with wild strawberry and spice. Vinified in small batches, separately. Wild ferments, whole bunch inclusion, larger oak and no filtration or fining define the natural character of the wine. "... the aromas are dried herbs and spices, blackberry jam and a suggestion of burnt blackberry jam. There's a core of sweet ripe fruit and then a wash of drying tannins sweeps through. Bold, straightforward and very attractive" (Huon Hooke, The Real Review).
Come savour pure, delicious 91pt Sevenhill Inigo Grenache from vines planted in the 1920s, without a hint of oak. Fresh aromas of strawberries, raspberries, cherries and a nice of cinnamon draw you in, leading to a pretty, finely detailed palate showcasing juicy fruits helmed by tart acidity. Another example of why Aussie Grenache is on the rise. "This is super-pale in the glass, and sets off with a magenta hue. Absolutely vibrant aromas, pretty and fresh; a cascade of pink fruit tumbles over itself to waft toward the nose. The palate is detailed, fresh and pretty, without the muscular, billowing density that grenache can achieve. A fine-boned wine that speaks of sumac strawberries, raspberry Freeza icypole, rhubarb pie, salted licorice and blackcurrant pastille... 91pts" (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).
Alex Russell is turning out some exceptional wines under his Russell & Suitor label. The reds are juicy, delicious and quite moreish, much like the Franca's Vineyard Grenache. It's from the Riverland, with just the right amount of sunshine for this thin-skinned varietal to tan its way to aromatic red fruit bliss. Beautiful aromas of strawberry, red cherry and spice are reflected on the palate and carry it through to a lovely, textured finish. A terrific long lunch wine.
Selected from a single vineyard located at New Residence in South Australia's Riverland, overlooking the Murray River. Planted in 1998 on rich red sandy loam over limestone, the Grenache is both concentrated and vibrant. A bouquet of lifted strawberry leads you to a medium-bodied expression of fresh cherry and raspberry. The silky smooth, fine-grained tannins add complexity. "Elegant and beautifully aromatic on the nose showing sweet plum, rich floral, olive and subtle savoury notes, leading to a gorgeously rounded palate offering succulent fruit flavours with supple texture and fine tannins. Wonderfully layered with delectable flavours, finishing long and refined... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
