Beyond the Labels
Our tasting panel was blown away with the surprising delights of a Gold-medal Hungerford Hill Pinot Meunier grown in cool-climate Tumbarumba. We’re not alone: other wine reviewers are also making a fuss, awarding it scores up to 95pts. We have included this beguiling wine in a special Hungerford Hill Mixed Dozen – taste across their premium reds and whites for a savings-packed $26.99 a bottle.
The use of stainless steel tanks and a lack of oak influence allow this vibrant 92pt Hunter Valley Semillon to be a pure reflection of the grape and region, with minimal winemaking intervention. Aromas of lemon, lime, tonic and thyme lead to a citrus-loaded palate, with a focused line of minerality drawing you to a burst of natural acidity on the finish. A crisp 92pt Hunter classic with "plenty to like" (Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion).
Winemaker Bryan Currie has been hunting for the best Pinot Noir grapes around the foothills of the Snowy Mountains near Tumbarumba for 20 years. "It’s taken a long time to get my head around Tumbarumba wine – it’s a truly unique place." His Hungerford Hill Tumbarumba Pinot Noir 2022 showcases notes of ripe cherries, wild red berries and hints of blackberry. These fruit aromas are intertwined with delicate violet florals and a touch of spice. The silky medium-bodied palate builds on the red fruits, with a touch of cranberry and a hint of forest floor or earthiness. Refreshing natural acidity forms the backbone, driving the depth of flavour to a lingering finish. Lovely drinking now but could cellar for 10 years.
Grown along the banks of the Hunter River this Chardonnay hails from the oldest continually operating vineyard in Australia, Dalwood. First planted by George Wyndham in 1828 this vineyard is a piece of living history that continues in this wine. The 2022 lures you in with spicy pineapple, peach and green mango aromas. A melding of tangy lemon and cashew nut flavours fill the palate, with crisp acidity giving a refreshing finish. Richness without high alcohol. "Light and bright straw yellow. Nectarine and reductive aromatics on the nose. Grapefruit pith, sea salt and struck flint notes run tightly bound through the core of the palate, ample power here with equal parts acidity to drive it. Good length and crisp to the end, time will be on your side here... 92pts" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review).
Trophy and Top Gold medal-winning, 96pt Hungerford Hill Tempranillo Graciano is a captivating fusion of two Spanish grape varieties, influenced by the unique terroir of the Hilltops. Look for ripe red fruit aromas like cherry and raspberry from the Tempranillo, along with a touch of black fruit complexity from the Graciano. Subtle floral notes and a hint of dried herbs also emerge. The French oak aging adds layers of vanilla, toasted spices and a touch of smokiness. This delicious high-scoring red blend effortlessly complements Mediterranean dishes, roasted vegetables and aged cheeses. This is "... raring to go" (Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion).
Hungerford Hill chief winemaker Bryan Currie has been making small quantities of Pinot Meunier for almost a decade, using fruit that was planted in the Snowy Mountains high country of Tumbarumba. They usually make an average of 300 dozen from their Pinot Meunier vineyard but this year sourced additional fruit from other Tumbarumba producers. Vibrant wild strawberry and vanilla aromas with purple flowers and a hint of melted butter creaminess to boot! Pristine red fruits on the palate (strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate), complemented by an earthy, forest-floor savouriness. Fine tannin profile, wonderful length. Elegance personified.
Beautifully versatile – a delight to chill and sip as an aperitif, but will work very well served with grilled fish, a seafood salad or fresh sushi. Expressive green apple, pear and honeysuckle scents with a hint of musk. Green apple and citrus flavours race to a clean zesty finish. Super refreshing. Put a couple of bottles in the fridge and enjoy, with or without food, preferably outdoors with friends.
