Malbec was made famous by Argentina, but Aussie drops are really impressive too. And of course France was the original home of this great grape. Taste top examples from all three countries here, including a white Mendoza Malbec! The T-Bone Malbec from Argentina's San Juan is (obviously!) the perfect partner to BBQ fare, and there’s a lavish Mendoza Malbec too – but this is a white wine! (Try it with smoky BBQ chicken wings, it’s delicious.) John Quarisa’s full-flavoured Q Malbec, Sam Trimboli’s triple barrelled Malbec Shiraz Durif and the fabulous 5OS Project from the great Steve Grimley are also great matches to a barbecue. There’s a gorgeous French star too, in the lovely Maison Legrand Malbec, a delicious partner to a platter of charcuterie.
Q Malbec. The Q stands for Quarisa. John Quarisa. He’s the man dubbed a "magician” by James Halliday because quite how he crafts such full flavoured, amazing value for money South Australian reds leaves some scratching their heads and others standing up in applause. Bright intense red with purple hues. Flavours of blueberries, also classic Malbec mulberry, red cherries and notes of cedar; cocoa and wafts of violets too. Generous and sensual, and through its structure remains rich and lush. Along with barbecues, Malbec teams up a treat with bold summery dishes.
We first met Sam at the Warburn Estate in New South Wales 30+ years back, and have been following him and his wines ever since. They deliver every time with lovely fruity intensity, originality and value. In 2018, he finally decided it was time to return to his roots and his family estate in Griffith. He has nurtured partnerships with long standing grower friends and made us two Salvatore wines, both of which keep winning awards! He is a true genius. Here he shows that Malbec can perform as well in Oz as it does in Argentina, then added a sizeable portion of Shiraz and, of course, his favourite variety, Durif. Aged for four months in French oak barrels, it's supple, smooth and packed with ripe fruit. Top choice with a hearty casserole.
Pure Argentinian magic lies in this inky black red – a wine for the meat-lovers among you. And non-carnivores too! It comes from an award-winning winery in San Juan, a lesser-known region in the north, making impressive wines. Crafted by a winemaker of 35 years' experience, Gino Santinon, this juicy red leads with Argentina’s star red grape, Malbec, with a dash of Cabernet. Gino uses grapes from high-altitude slopes, up to 764 metres altitude. At these lofty heights the grapes bathe in glorious sunlight but are kept cool at night. The result is brilliantly fresh fruit with perfect velvety-smooth ripeness that you can enjoy in the T-Bone. Packed with rich damson, plum and blueberry flavours, it'll make you want to slap a steak on the barbie.
Maison Legrand is the result of a collaboration between two good friends, both with long and varied wine careers that span the renowned regions of France as well as ventures in the New World. Together they've created a winery that aims to celebrate quality and the joy of classic varietals. Their Malbec is the product of over 40 years of combined wine experience and showcases the brilliance of Malbec from the Lot. Careful parcel selection and modern winemaking have created a deeply coloured red wine with the perfect balance of red summer fruit aromas, vibrant raspberry, plum and ripe cherry flavours and velvety tannins. It's a silky, expressive wine and the perfect choice for enjoying with pork chops, pasta dishes or a spicy bean wrap.
Malbec, the ultimate red wine grape. Or so you may have thought. True it does make absurdly popular reds, but our buyer discovered it can also make exceptional and different white wines. Now it's a grape to please both red and white wine lovers! By taking away the skins and using only the juice, the winemaker has created a distinctively fruity, deliciously fresh white. You’ve seen Pinot Noir do it for Champagne, now the mighty Malbec is showing off its multiple talent. The respected Alambrado estate takes this flagship grape to new limits. With soft fruit, lots of zippy lemony tang and a delicate floral note it makes very enjoyable drinking. If you like white wines with character, this is one for you. Pair it with chicken or crisp salads.
How does a Merlot become a Malbec? Well, when winemaker Steve Grimley first started making this wine, he and the grower thought the grapes were Merlot. But when they looked at the not-very-Merlot-like juice samples mid-ferment, they realised they needed to call in an ampelographer. Definitely not a Merlot! It was Malbec, and thus their special Malbec project was born. These days, Steve sources the fruit from the Lopresti vineyard, one of his favourites, which produces wines with alluring warmed fruits and a generous palate. Look forward to musk, strawberry jam and raisin toast aromas on a lavishly generous palate.
