In 1988 Kym, Ang and Bec Tolley joined forces to buy a block of land in Coonawarra and Penley Estate was underway, the amalgamation of 5th generation wine families Penfold and Tolley. In 2015, when Kym retired, sisters Ang and Bec took on the task of revitalising and reinvigorating the company, in honour of the pioneering wine women that had come before them. “We’ll leave you with the words of our glamorous mother; words that we hope you’ll taste in every bottle of our contemporary Coonawarra wine... ‘Grow up and be fascinating’” (Ang & Bec Tolley). Newly rated 5 Red Stars, the estate is impressing with wines like this dazzling star: “70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc, 10% merlot. 40% new French oak. It’s not the deepest wine in the range but chains of tannin pulls this wine long. Tobacco, mint, tar and blackcurrant flavours, in that order of priority, create a wine of both substance and warmth... 94pts” (Halliday).
