Wine Summary

It has been over 10 years since the first El Campeador had Spanish wine lovers clambering for more. The vineyards are situated around the small town of Jumilla, in the southern Spanish province of Murcia. A fine blend of Syrah (50%), Monastrell (40%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The Syrah vines were planted at an altitude of between 650m and 700m, while the incredible 110-year-old Monastrell vineyard sits even higher and pre-dates the great phylloxera attack that devastated the region`s viticulture in the early 20th century. Year-round sunshine and scant rainfall, produces miniscule, low-yielding vines that develop intensely fruit-forward and richly aromatic grapes. The time in oak adds hints of vanilla and mocha to the dark mass of concentrated black fruits, all wrapped in a smooth and velvety texture. "Brambly and fruity nose full of ripecherries, nicely baked berries, grilled herbs and spices. Ripe and giving on the palate with fleshy, generous fruit and firm tannins. Puglia offers “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson) and “reds that give you a lot of wine for your money” (Decanter), yet even in this context Pillastro Selezione d’Oro stands out. It's the work of Angelo Maci, a champion of the region, who started the Cantine Due Palme cellar in the 1980s to save the growers and the region's traditions. Since then Cantine Due Palme has been Winery of the Year three times, while Angelo Maci has multiple Winemaker of the Year titles and a Lifetime Achievement award. This premium edition takes grapes from 50-year-old vines to add even greater depth of flavour. Ageing in French oak barrels adds spice to this complex rich, dense fruit red. Decant and serve with roast meats or a rich pasta dish.

Hervé Sabardeil, our winemaker with limitless talent, has been making Cabalié, the big, ripe Catalan red, for over 15 years. He added the old-vine (Vieilles Vignes) edition in 2011, originally as a one off, but it was so popular we insisted he did it again. And again! The magic to this punchy red is really in the vines. At 60 to 100-years-old, yields are minute (about half of a Grand Cru claret). As a rule of thumb, the smaller the yield, the more concentrated the fruit, the more flavoursome the wine! That’s why we call it Cabalié’s Big Brother. Still made in the same style that was beloved by the Roman centurions and now our customers too, it packs even more flavour than the original. Ideal with garlic-roasted lamb, rich stews or cheese. “Nose of black fruits with white pepper and liquorice touches. Silky, solid attack driven by stewed fruits.
