The Wine
Jonathon Hesketh comes from a distinguished wine family, and put in the hard yards at some top estates. However, he soon realised that “working for the man was never going to feed two dogs, four children, two cats, four chickens and an ever-so-patient wife”, so he made a go of it himself. Clarity, value and style are the three core values of the winery today and the Ebenezer hits them all. Complex nose of spicy plums, mulberry, rhubarb, lifted florals and sarsaparilla trigger the senses. The palate is awash with dark plums, sour cherries, red licorice and vanilla bean running along a clean acid line. Lovely sweetness mid-palate on the way to a long lingering finish. So much to enjoy. Matured in new and used French oak barriques for 18 months. An absolute steal. “Spicy black fruit depth and licorice might are Ebenezer signatures. French oak brings control and definition in its fine tannin lattice, adding dark chocolate and coffee bean to a long finish. A shiraz of considerable dimensions... 92pts” (Tyson Stelzer).
