The Wine
Since its inaugural release in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz has been the cool-climate counterpoint to the winery's warm-climate Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz. It's not hard to like both, but our money's on the 128 for value and guaranteed good drinking. "12 months maturation in French hogsheads (26% new) resulted in a wine with a vivid yet deep crimson-purple hue that duly delivered on the promise of its colour. A light year away from the style of the '80s, American oak providing more flavour than the fruit. Now there's a velvety-smooth abundance of plum, blackberry compote and spice couched in soft, but persistent, tannins... 94pts" (Halliday).
