Steve ‘Serafino’ Maglieri AM is a larger than life figure in Australian wine, his marvellous McLaren Vale reds win an astonishing array of medals and trophies worldwide. Between both Steve and his daughter Maria, they’ve been crowned McLaren Vale Bushing Monarch at the McLaren Vale Wine Show an incredible three times. Maria now heads the winery and, together with Jimmy Watson-winning winemaker Charles Whish, continues the award-winning tradition. From Serafino’s coveted Sharktooth block, a few years in bottle has really seen this wine come together. “30% new American oak, 20% new French oak. It delivers flavour with a baseball bat. It’s thick, heavy, dense and strong... toasted wood, coffee-cream and blackberry. There are musky violet-like notes but the strong fruit-and-oak barges through... the concentration here is excellent, the ripe and fine-grained nature of the tannin likewise, and the length completely convincing… 95pts” (Halliday Wine Companion, Campbell Mattinson).
