The Wine
Dr John Forrest is one of the greats of the Marlborough wine scene, famous for Sauvignon Blanc with flavours and aromas off the scale. He’s such a perfectionist that if a vintage isn’t up to scratch, he just won’t make any wine. Having decided to swap medicine for winemaking, John Forrest spent a few vintages in the Loire and translated all he discovered about Sauvignon to New Zealand. Field of Stones is his most treasured vineyard, with soils very similar in character to that of the Loire. Here he has produced a classically styled Sauvignon with the help of his daughter Beth. With its lean, minerally, gooseberry flavours, it’s easy to mistake it for a good Sancerre. A great match for oysters, grilled white fish or simply as an apéritif.
